Key clinical point: Transgenderism often overlaps with autism, and levels of depression and anxiety were highest in transgender individuals with autism, compared with transgender individuals without autism and cisgender individuals.

Major finding: Individuals with autism who identified as transgender had significantly higher depression scores than those without autism (P = .002), and individuals identifying as transgender had significantly higher rates of depression than those identifying as cis (P = .001). Results were similar for anxiety.

Study details: The data come from an online survey of 727 adults who self-identified as gender variant, including 62 with an autism diagnosis.
