Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation alleviates OCD symptoms

Key clinical point: Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation is safe and effective for treatment of refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Major finding: A 30% or greater reduction in obsessive-compulsive disorder symptom severity occurred in 38% of patients in response to deep transcranial magnetic stimulation, compared with 11% who got sham treatment.

Study details: This randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial included 99 refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder patients treated for 6 weeks at 11 centers in three countries.
