Two consecutive negative FUBC results clear S. aureus bacteremia

Key clinical point: Additional blood cultures are not necessary after two FUBC results are negative in well-appearing children.

Major finding: Less than 5% of the 122 patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia had intermittent positive cultures, and less than 1% had repeat positive cultures following two negative FUBC results. Risk of endocarditis or osteomyelitis diagnosis more than doubles with intermittent positive cultures.

Study details: Retrospective cohort study of 122 pediatric patients with S. aureus bacteremia.

Disclosures: The investigators had no conflicts of interest and no relevant financial disclosures.
