Vaginal cleansing at cesarean delivery works in practice

Key clinical point: Vaginal cleansing with a sponge stick preparation of 10% povidone-iodine solution before nonelective cesarean delivery significantly decreased the rate of surgical site infections.

Major finding: Surgical site infection rate dropped 33% – from 23% to 15% – as resident and staff physicians and other hospital staff were educated or reminded about the practice.

Study details: A quality improvement study involving 1,033 patients.
