Parent education improves quick disposal of children’s unused prescription opioids

Key clinical point: Educating parents on unused opioid disposal methods and risks of retaining leftover opioids can reduce likelihood of retention.

Major finding: Almost 35% of parents instructed on proper disposal of unused opioids discarded them, while 24% of usual care parents did not (odds ratio, 1.68; P = .01).

Study details: The findings are based on a randomized controlled trial of 517 parents whose children were prescribed a short course of opioids.

Disclosures: The National Institute on Drug Addiction funded the research. The authors reported having no conflicts of interest.
