Virtual dark therapy tames manic episodes

Key clinical point: Mean YMRS scores after 7 days of wearing blue-blocking glasses dropped by 14.1 points, compared with just 1.7 points in patients wearing clear lenses.

Major finding: Virtual dark therapy using blue light spectrum–blocking glasses is a highly effective adjunct to standard antimanic medications in patients with bipolar mania.

Study details: This randomized, prospective, multicenter, single blind study included 23 patients hospitalized for manic symptoms and bipolar disorder who were assigned to wear blue light–blocking or clear lens glasses.
