HPV vaccination remains below Healthy People goals despite increases

Key clinical point: Trends show an increase in HPV vaccination among U.S. adolescents, but the numbers fall short of national goals and vary significantly by state.

Major finding: The proportion of 15-year-old girls who received at least one dose of HPV vaccine increased from 38% in 2011 to 57% in 2017; the comparable proportions for boys were 5% and 51%.

Study details: The findings come from a nested cohort study of data from the MarketScan health care database between January 2003 and December 2017 that included 7,837,480 children and 19.8 million person-years.

Disclosures: The study received no outside funding. Dr. Chen had no financial conflicts to disclose. Several coauthors reported research grants to their institutions from pharmaceutical companies or being consultants to such companies.
