Liposomal bupivacaine excreted in breast milk, but levels appear safe

Key clinical point: After cesarean birth followed by a truncal block, locally infiltrated liposomal bupivacaine is excreted in breast milk, but relative neonatal dosages are below the level of concern.

Major finding: The mean relative neonatal dosage of bupivacaine over the course of 4 days was 0.396%.

Study details: A prospective cohort study involving 30 healthy pregnant women who underwent cesarean birth at term followed by a transversus abdominis plane block with liposomal bupivacaine.

Disclosures: The study was funded by the Thrasher Research Fund. The investigators reported no conflicts of interest.
